Why Port Stephens Homes Are at Risk of High Water Pressure

If you've ever noticed your taps blasting out water like a fire hose, or you're going through flexi hoses faster than you should, high water pressure is probably the culprit. It's one of the most common (and most overlooked) issues we see across Port Stephens homes, and it quietly does damage for years before anyone notices.

What Counts as High Water Pressure

Under AS/NZS 3500.1, residential water pressure should sit between 150kPa and 500kPa, with most homes designed to run comfortably around 350-500kPa. Anything consistently above that starts putting real strain on your pipework and fittings, even if everything still seems to be working fine on the surface.

Why It's Such a Common Problem Around Here

A lot of the Port Stephens area, especially Corlette, Salamander Bay and parts of Nelson Bay, sits on mains pressure that runs higher than what a lot of older homes were plumbed for. The Fix: A Pressure Limiting Valve

A pressure limiting valve (PLV) is fitted where the water main enters your property and brings incoming pressure back down to a safe, consistent level. Under AS/NZS 3500.1, a PLV is required whenever incoming pressure exceeds 500kPa, and it's cheap insurance against the kind of damage that adds up quietly over years.

If you already have one fitted, it's worth checking every few years too. PLVs wear out like any other valve, and a failed one gives you all the same problems as not having one at all.
