Smell gas? Act now. Turn off the gas at the bottle or meter, open doors and windows, and get everyone outside. Don't switch anything on or off, don't light a flame, and don't use your phone inside. Once you're clear, call your gas supplier's emergency line or 000, then a licensed gas fitter.
Gas is one of those jobs where there's no DIY option. In NSW, any gas work has to be done by a licensed gas fitter, full stop.
That's not red tape for the sake of it. Bad gas work kills people through leaks, fires and carbon monoxide.
Here's a plain-English rundown of what gas fitting covers, the warning signs to watch for, and when you need to pick up the phone.
What a Gas Fitter Actually Does
A licensed gas fitter installs, repairs and certifies anything that runs on gas — natural gas or bottled LPG.
Around Port Stephens that covers homes, businesses, and the big one a lot of locals forget: caravans and relocatable dwellings.
Common gas fitting jobs include:
• Installing and connecting gas hot water systems, cooktops, ovens and heaters
• Running and repairing gas lines and fittings
• Swapping over or relocating LPG bottles and regulators
• Leak testing and fault finding
• Caravan and camper gas certificates and compliance work
• Issuing a gas compliance certificate once work is signed off
The Warning Signs of a Gas Problem
Gas faults don't always announce themselves with a smell. Know what to look for.
Signs of a gas leak
• A rotten-egg smell near appliances, bottles or the meter
• A hissing sound from a line, fitting or appliance
• Higher gas bills with no change in how much you're using
• Dead or yellowing plants near a buried gas line outside
Signs an appliance is burning badly
• A yellow or orange flame instead of crisp blue
• Soot or black marks around a heater, cooktop or hot water unit
• A pilot light that keeps dropping out
• Condensation, headaches or drowsiness when an appliance is running — possible carbon monoxide
If you spot any carbon monoxide signs, treat it as an emergency. Shut the appliance off, ventilate, get outside, and call a licensed gas fitter.
Why You Can't DIY Gas in NSW
Unlicensed gas work is illegal in NSW and it voids your insurance. If something goes wrong, you're not covered.
All gas work has to meet the Australian Standards — AS/NZS 5601.1 for homes and AS/NZS 5601.2 for caravans and relocatable dwellings.
A licensed gas fitter leak tests the system, sets it to standard, and issues a compliance certificate as proof the work is safe and signed off.
Gas in Caravans and Relocatable Dwellings
Caravan gas runs to a different standard than your house, and the rules have tightened up.
• An LCC27 hose and regulator setup is required on any compliance certificate issued after 1 April 2022.
• Old POL adaptors are no longer allowed.
• A carbon monoxide detector is required in certain setups.
• Gas hoses should be replaced at least every 10 years.
If you're buying, selling, or registering a van, or just want peace of mind before a trip, a gas certificate gets the system checked and signed off properly.
